Thomas Fuchs

Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information

The lawyer Thomas Fuchs (born 1965) has been the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information since 2021. He is a member of the High-Level Group for the Digital Markets Act, which is chaired by the European Commission.

 

From 2008 to 2021, he served as the Director of the State Media Regulatory Authority of Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein (MA HSH). Additionally, he was a member of the federal Commission for Youth Media Protection.

 

His professional career in the public sector commenced in 1996, when he entered the Civil Service of the City of Hamburg (Germany).

 

Among other roles, he served as

  • Head of the Presidential Department at the Authority for Science and Research
  • Department Head at the Authority for Culture
  • Board Member of the Elbphilharmonie Foundation

 

Prior to this, Thomas studied law in Hamburg and Brussels and received the Magister Legum Europae (LL.M. Eur.) at the Centre of European Law and Politics in Bremen (ZERP).

 

These academic achievements and professional experiences have equipped Thomas with a comprehensive understanding of legal principles, particularly within the domains of European and media law, which he has applied throughout his career in regulatory oversight.
