Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of any democratic society. In line with the First amendment of the American constitution, Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 11 of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights states that “1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. 2. The freedom and pluralism of the media shall be respected.”
The emergence of new regulations aiming at moderating online content has a direct impact on freedom of expression and raises concerns. This programme will discuss this complex and fundamental question. As digital regulation expands and content monitoring obligations evolve, fundamental questions arise about how to safeguard freedom of expression and access to information in a democratic society. These sessions invite participants to engage with the essential debates shaping the future of democratic freedoms online, offering a space to reflect on how regulatory measures can coexist with, and reinforce, the principles of free expression.
